Lebadang Memory Space

On April 21, 2019, a place of memory and an exhibition center dedicated to Lebadang was realized with the opening of “Lebadang Memory Space” in Kim Son hamlet, Thuy Bang commune, Huong Thuy town, Thùa Thiên Huê province.

The Lebadang Memory Space

Lebadang had been dreaming of this full-scale “Spaces” for a long time, and today, this dream has become reality.

In 1985, Lebadang created his first “Spaces”. They are works on paper combining various techniques by using collage and superimposition, mid way between sculptures and bas-reliefs, like a synthesis reaching beyond these two forms of expression.

Lebadang uses paper made especially for him at the Mill of Larroque in Dordogne, a pure handmade rag paper extremely thick, which he tears up by hand and joins together in successive layers. He cuts and assembles shapes which later become lakes and mountains, deserts and rivers, unknown and new territories. Landscapes seen from the sky. At that time, he is interested in the aerial views of the geoglyphs of Nazca by the American photographer Marilyn Bridges. He sees in them a bond between man and the Cosmos.

Numerous sketches, writings and projects show his interest in creating full-scale “Spaces”. “Spaces” on a human scale. Places to wander, dream and meditate.

And this dream, which has come true today, is the “Lebadang Memory Space”, a place of memory and an exhibition center.

The Story of a Dream

During his lifetime, artist Lê Bá Dang had envisioned a space which could facilitate his creativity and exhibit his full-scale artworks. When he passed away in 2015, that dream was left unfulfilled.

Mrs. Lê Cam Tê, who had spent more than a decade working with Lê Bá Dang, was well aware of his lifelong vision to create his own artist’s paradise and made it her responsibility to fulfill his wishes post-humously. She began by locating a plot of land to build “Lebadang Memory Space”, which she found in Huong Thuy town. Previously, it was a vacant hill where the soil was red, hard and rocky. Despite being discouraged by peers from choosing this particular location, she envisioned a beautiful space and pursued upon her initial admiration for the land.

In 2016, the year after Lê Bá Dang’s passing, Mrs. Cam Tê invited Mrs. Myshu, the wife of Lê Bá Dang, to visit the plotted land for the “Lebadang Memory Space”. Upon discussing the project and ideas, Mrs. Myshu gave her full approval and has continued to show her support since.

The first of many considerations was the architectural design. After a range of suggestions were discussed, the decision was made by Mrs. Myshu to use a Lê Bá Dang paper artwork as the architectural model for the main building. Mrs. Myshu also asked for absolute loyalty to the original. With the collaboration and contributions of a consortium of people including architect Hô Viêt Vinh, artist Tô Bich Hai, media designer Luc HO, interior designer Éric Mignard and constructional engineer Vu Trung Kiên, the small-scale artwork was turned into the magnificent building that stands today.

“The garden is my soul and love for Mr. Lê Bá Dang and Mrs. Myshu” Mrs. Cam Tê said. She specifically chose the flowers, fruit trees, and bougainvillea which were loved by Lê Bá Dang. The flowers’ palette of purples and reds form the garden’s theme.

On 21st April 2019, Lê Bá Dang’s vision was realized with the opening of “Lebadang Memory Space” in Kim Son hamlet, Thuy Bang commune, Huong Thuy town, Thùa Thiên Huê province. With support from local and international friends and admirers of Lê Bá Dang, Mrs. Lê Cam Tê’s mission and Lê Bá Dang’s vision had been completed.

“Lebadang Memory Space” now serves as an exhibition for Lebadang artworks. The space is also set to be the destination for encounters, exchanges of people who love fine art in general and Lebadang art in particular as well as to host future events.

Câu chuyện về một giấc mơ

Sinh thời họa sĩ Lê Bá Đảng đã từng mơ về một không gian mà nơi đó có thể tự do sáng tạo và trưng bày các tác phẩm của mình với chiều kích thật. Cho đến khi ông qua đời vào năm 2015, mong ước đó vẫn chưa thể trở thành hiện thực.

Bà Lê Cẩm Tế – người đã từng được làm việc với họa sĩ Lê Bá Đảng trong suốt hơn một thập kỷ, luôn trăn trở với tâm nguyện của ông. Với mong muốn hoàn thành tâm nguyện đó, bà đã tìm được một mảnh đất để xây dựng nhà lưu niệm cho họa sĩ. Đó là một ngọn đồi hoang vắng thuộc thị xã Hương Thủy nơi đất đỏ khô cứng và trơ sỏi đá. Mặc dù rất ít người đồng tình, bà vẫn quyết định chọn khu đất bởi bà đã nhìn thấy được ở đây bóng dáng của một không gian đẹp trong tương lai.

Năm 2016, một năm sau ngày mất của họa sĩ Lê Bá Đảng, bà Cẩm Tế đã mời bà Myshu, phu nhân họa sĩ Lê Bá Đảng, lên thăm khu vườn nhỏ và ấm áp này. Bà Myshu rất thích và khi biết ý định xây dựng một Không gian Lưu niệm Lebadang, bà đã đồng ý và ủng hộ ngay từ lúc đó.

Thời gian sau, đã có những cuộc thảo luận về việc thiết kế công trình. Sau khi cân nhắc nhiều phương án thiết kế, bà Myshu đã quyết định chọn một tác phẩm cắt trên giấy của họa sĩ Lê Bá Đảng để làm kiến trúc tòa nhà chính và yêu cầu tuân thủ theo nguyên mẫu. Với tất cả nghiên cứu và nỗ lực, kiến trúc sư Hồ Viết Vinh, họa sĩ Tô Bích Hải, chuyên gia thiết kế truyền thông Luc Ho, chuyên gia thiết kế nội thất Éric Mignard, kỹ sư Vũ Văn Kiên đã hiện thực hóa tác phẩm cắt trên giấy này ở tỉ lệ nhỏ thành một tòa nhà tráng lệ với công năng và quy mô hoàn chỉnh như ngày nay.

“Khu vườn chính là tâm hồn và tình cảm của tôi dành cho ông Lê Bá Đảng và bà Myshu” Bà Cẩm Tế cho biết. Bà chọn lựa những loài hoa, cây ăn trái và nhiều cây hoa giấy mà lúc sinh thời họa sĩ Lê Bá Đảng yêu thích. Đặc biệt màu tím và màu đỏ của các loài hoa là màu chủ đạo của khu vườn.

Ngày 21/4/2019, giấc mơ của họa sĩ Lê Bá Đảng đã thành hiện thực với sự ra đời của Không gian Lưu niệm Ledadang (Lebadang Memory Space) tại thôn Kim Sơn, xã Thủy Bằng, huyện Hương Thủy, tỉnh Thừa Thiên Huế. Giấc mơ của họa sĩ Lê Bá Đảng cùng sứ mệnh của bà Cẩm Tế đã vẹn tròn với sự giúp đỡ của những người yêu nghệ thuật Lebadang trong nước và trên thế giới.

Không gian Lưu niệm Lebadang hiện là nơi trưng bày các tác phẩm nghệ thuật được bà Myshu trao tặng, cùng những tác phẩm họa sĩ ủy thác cho bà Cẩm Tế từ năm 2009 đến 2012 và những kỉ vật họa sĩ đã tặng trong suốt hơn 10 năm làm việc với ông. Đây cũng là không gian gặp gỡ, trao đổi của những người yêu nghệ thuật trong và ngoài nước cũng như tổ chức các sự kiện trong tương lai.
